Raising Awareness

Stigma surrounding the words 'epilepsy' and 'seizure' has progressively diminished during the past century, but it still exists in today's culture; whether in the workplace or amongst close friends, there are many misconceptions about epilepsy. Many people mistakenly believe those with the condition are 'broken' sometimes even too dangerous to employ. None of this is true, of course, but because epilepsy is so unknown and misunderstood despite the millions who experience seizures it is difficult for organizations, like the Epilepsy Foundation, to teach people otherwise.

The National Walk for Epilepsy will continue to bring attention to what epilepsy is and is not. As we walk together in Washington, DC or in our communities, we will be sending a strong message to our neighbors, our colleagues, and to opinion leaders across the nation … our message: People with epilepsy are deserving of respect and are strong members of our community at the workplace, in school, at home and in any social setting, and epilepsy itself deserves to be better understood.
